Call it a hot hot dog cart. On Tuesday, 44-year-old hot dog salesman Bruno Bersani arrived downtown to find his old-fashioned, New York-style pushcart with the red-and-yellow umbrella missing. Thieves apparently had stolen the $2,400 mobile hot dog cooker along with the $600 utility trailer he used to store it in. "I always expected to get robbed," Bersani said. "But you don't expect somebody to steal the whole hot dog cart." Bersani, who has been selling jumbo-sized hot dogs with bacon to a late night bar crowd at Olive Street and Broadway for close to a year, never did get robbed, but he says thieves stole his livelihood sometime between 3:30 a.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. Tuesday. "The police think that whoever took it probably thought it was tools," Bersani said. "They probably were disappointed when they saw a hot dog trailer." Bersani's trailer and cart were secured with three locks and parked at a U-Park lot on Lincoln Street between Broadway and 10th Avenue. The propane-powered cart was adorned with a magnetic sign bearing the name of the business "Brundoggies Hot Dog Hut." There were no sausages in the cart.
To make matters worse, Tuesday was Bersani's birthday. He relied on the income he earned from his fledgling business to pay his mortgage and support his 10-year-old son, Oscar. The cart was insured, but Bersani will have to wait to receive a settlement and order a new cart from a dealer in Florida. "I'm going to be out of commission here for a while," Bersani said. "I'm just too strapped I have to sell my house. I'm going to have to consolidate and go into survival mode." Ty Connor, a long·time acquaintance of Bersani's and a bartender at nearby bars The Horsehead and Jameson's, vented his frustration over the incident. Well yesterday I had my pre -open and warehouse inspection from the county health inspector, Amy. Amy was as nice as could be but under that facade I detected a stern task master with an eye and ear for details. She didn't miss a thing and even baited me a little with trick statements. In the end I passed both inspections with flying colors and so, as of yesterday 04-06-10, I own a real 'Mom and Pop" hot dog stand.

The next goal I have is to sign the lease with the folks at the mall. That should happen eighter Thursday or Friday. Opening day is scheduled for 10:00am 04-20-10.

April 1st 2010 is the date I officially applied for a license to sell hot dogs in the county. The folks at City Hall said I could start selling as early as the 15th. It sure will be nice to have a job again. This unemployment thing gets old and makes me want to sleep.

I say that because I spoke to the folks at the mall,this afternoon, who by the way had just returned from a meeting where they discussed the renting of spaces to people like me. And by chance I was the first one in the door to apply. Thise bridge crosses the Willamette River and connects a very large park to the biggest mall in the area.

Today I purchased my first business insurance policy, hired a artist to paint the logo for Dexter Dan and ordered other signs. I also chatted with a health inspector and closed a few more doors. Oh and then there was the lentils which I cooked up for the first time ever. That's because I need a vegan dish for my menu. One of my vegan friends mentioned lentile soup as a favorit. So it's lentils for dinner tonight. Yum yum yum.

The other day I was crossing the causeway between Lowell and HWY 58 when I saw two Bald Eagles attacking a lone duck. The eagles were attacking in a manor that caused the duck to stay under water except to breath. As I watched the eagles would take turns attacking there prey when it surfaced for air. The duck was doomed, the eagles had timed their attacks as to keep the duck under water. As the duck surfaced one of the eagles was there to attack which ment the end was inevitable. Having never seen such an event, I was shocked. I saw no anger just extreme intent and primal fear. After several minutes of my observing I decided to run for my camera which was at home and only minutes away. When I return I found a calm atmosphere with no sign of the raptors or their pray. My guess is the eagles were feasting not to far away.

Man, this has been a suck ass week with a silver lining. Monday the Blazer blew a heater hose on the way home from work. I found a shop two blocks away from where I broke down and the good guys there gave me enough hose to repair the leak. The only tool in the truck was a screwdriver and it was also the only tool I needed. Then on the way home the water fried the electrical system. I managed to pull into the driveway but that was all she wrote for the truck. Luckily the Sportster was ready for the task of daily driver. Then I broke the kickstand on the damn thing. Thursday on my drive home, I got soaked with the first rain in months. On Friday I had the Blazer towed to a repair shop for which I had to pay the savings I had realised from my final payment on the beast, just two days earlier.
So now I don't have to make anymore payments on the truck but she doesn't work. The bike is on the road and running strong but has to be propped against something and looks like a lame duck. Oh ya I had new tires put on the Blazer two days before this all happened and with some concern I might add because whenever I have bought new tires for a vehicle, it has died or broke real bad. The RX7 , a Taurus, and Blaze that's three in a row. Now, if I need to get gas or shop, I'm counting on a bicycle or a Harley with no kickstand....... Which by the way has new tires that I bought just before the rebuild.
